Feeding off Jay's post about the conspicuous consumerism of parenthood, I'm feeling the need to talk about the culture of pregnancy today. It's fashionable to be pregnant. And the fashion reflects it. Every time I go shopping with a friend of mine, we're amazed at the number of shirts that are designed to make young girls look pregnant. Look at
the Ruehl shirts - if they're not tiny tiny tiny, they're designed to highlight a pregnant belly. Hollister is the same way - tank tops with serious serious A-lines. Look at the Highway 101 tank and the La Jolla Cove tanks here. Put them on and you're going to look like you're wearing maternity clothes. And this is the style today. Girls want to look pregnant. For all I know, girls want to be pregnant. And I honestly think this goes back to the lack of true sex education - and I hate that term, but I'll use it for now. We're not helping kids to understand how not to get pregnant (and abstinence-only education works about as well as a deterrent as the death penalty works to deter crime). And the new accessory for celebrities are either their pregnant bellies or their newborns. So the fashion industry has jumped on the bandwagon and made looking preggers cool.
As much as I'm a "whatever gets you through the day as long as you don't impose your beliefs on me" kind of person, I fear that this is going to result in more teen pregnancies. And no one can think that is a good thing...
