I gave a friend a bunch of mix discs yesterday. We listened to them all night. I'm a happy camper. This song is on one of them. I know it's been done by a lot of people, but this is the version I've had in my head all day.
And it's six in the morning,
Gave me no warning -
I had to be on my way.
Well there's trucks all a-passing,
And the lights all are flashing,
I'm on my way home
From the place.
Well the sun's coming up,
I'm riding with Lady Luck.
Freeways, cars and trucks.
Stars beginning to fade.
And I lead the parade
Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer,
Oh Lord,
Let me tell you that the feeling's getting stronger.
Well, my time has come quickly,
I go lickety-splitly
Down to my old '55.
As I pulled away slowly,
I was feeling so holy,
God knows
I was feeling alive.
Now the sun's coming up,
I'm riding with Lady Luck,
Freeways,
cars
And trucks.
Freeways,
cars
And trucks.
Freeways,
Cars and trucks ...
- (the) Sarah McLachlan (version), "Ol' 55"
Yes, still listening to the Sarah McLachlan album.
Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows?
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions,
But only illusions.
Rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it,
I know they're wrong,
Wait and see.
Some day we'll find it,
The rainbow connection,
The lovers
The dreamers
And me.
Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered?
When wished on the morning
Star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it's done
So far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection,
The lovers,
The dreamers,
And me.
All of us under its spell
You know that it's probably
Magic.
Have you been half asleep?
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound
That called the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection,
The lovers,
The dreamers,
And me.
- Kenny Archer/Paul Williams, "The Rainbow Connection"
Yes. I'm posting a lyric of the day on the day itself - no one faint. This is because I finally listened to Sarah McLachlan's Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff Vol 2 tonight. (Yes, I'm in a Sarah mood today. The work related video showing this morning has made me a bit crazy all day.) And it's got at least 3 songs she's done that I didn't have and was dying for: Blackbird, Just Like Me, and The Rainbow Connection. I had seen her perform Blackbird in concert during the Afterglow tour and it is fantastic. And I'm sure, like the Fallen video I tried to embed earlier I won't be able to do this one either. So here's a link (not the whole cover, but a decent capture from the tour).
And here are the lyrics.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night.
Take these broken wings and learn to fly.
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arrive.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night.
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see.
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
- Lennon/McCarthy, "Blackbird"
But how did I miss the hotness that is this video until JUST NOW?
(Edit: figured out why the video won't embed - damn But I've linked to it here. Damn Sony copyright.)
I was testing the hardware in my training lab cuz some
And oh my gawd. How have I missed the bathtub and the rain and the wetness?
Maybe I need to take the rest of the day off to just sit mesmerized.
What are your top five break-up songs?
Submitted by gt.
I'm with Bookmole on this one. There are so many different kinds of breakups that I'm not sure that 5 songs covers it. And I'm joining this with my lyric of the day, because it seems silly not to.
However, if I need to pick 5, the ones below come to mind. And I know they're female heavy. When I think of breakup songs,, I do think of women, mostly because I think they sing about heartbreak better than men.
"Well, it's too late then
You could have told me when
Living died;
When passion lied."
"I suppose I should be happy to be misread
Better be that
Than some of the other things I have become.
But nobody wants to hear this tale.
The plot is cliched,
The jokes are stale."
"For all the things I said to her
And all the ways I tried.
And all the things I did for her
Are lost with one goodbye."
Show us the person you'd most like to switch bodies and lives with for one freaky Friday.
I was with Sarah on this one when she said that this smacks of an earlier "would you want to be someone else" entry. But after reading her idea that it's just one day, I began to think about it in a different way. What would I want to experience for one day, who would I want to learn from for one day.
There's a couple:
I'd want her talent, her humour, her unbelievable beauty, her humbleness and groundedness. I'd like her ability to speak French fluently. I also find it amusing that she was in the original Freaky Friday.
Played it several times yesterday to center myself in the middle of a REALLY BAD day.
You take me in
No questions asked.
You strip away the ugliness
That surrounds me.
Are you an angel?
Am I already that gone?
I only hope
That I won't disappoint you
When I'm down here
On my knees.
And sweet
Sweet
Sweet surrender
Is all that I have to give.
Sweet
Sweet
Sweet surrender
Is all that I have to give.
And I don't understand
By the touch of your hand
I would be the one to fall.
- Sarah McLachlan, "Sweet Surrender"
What's your ultimate rainy day song?
Submitted by J-Len.
Depends on the type of day. These are the ones that come to mind right now and can always change. Because there is no "ultimate" song.
Answer - Sarah McLachlan
Strong Persuader - Robert Cray
A Go Go - John Scofield
Box of Rain - Grateful Dead
Royal Station 4/16 - Melissa Etheridge
Wind Beneath My Wings - Sheena Easton
Darling Nikki - Prince
I'm sure there's more. And I'm sure that I'm forgetting an obvious one or six. But those are the ones that come to mind.
She wrote this song because she was being stalked and wanted to understand the mind of the stalker. It's not really a happy song; it's actually very creepy and, having been stalked before, I can relate to it. I don't do well with people constantly in my face (or on my screen, on my phone, around me every day). In fact, someone I don't know well does it too much, and they're cut off.
Such is the way of one who has been stalked.
Into this night I wander;
It’s morning that I dread.
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread.
Oh
Into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride.
Nothing stands between us here
And I won’t be denied.
And I would be the one
To hold you down.
Kiss you so hard,
I’ll take your breath away.
And after I’d wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear.
- Sarah McLachlan, "Possession"
Audio: Share a song you could listen to all day on repeat.
Right now? Cuz this will change soon, I'm sure. But right now, this is the song I have on repeat. Which reminds me, I need to go buy Afterglow Live. My not-soon-enough-ex kept the copy we had.
